Spelled either Kilanerin or Killinierin, the Irish Coill an Iarainn means the Wood of the Iron. The Kilanerin / Curragh Woods walk passes through 100 acres of native mixed woodland. Among the native trees that can be seen are alder, ash, birch, hawthorn, oak, holly, willow, non-native beech, spruce and larch. In the Ballynestragh Estate, you can see Australian eucalyptus from the edge of the woods.

In our four seasons, a variety of carpets are rolled out underfoot for the welcome walker. The colour and splendour are provided by bluebells, violets, ferns, rushes, foxgloves, wild orchids, and a wide magical range of fungi. With the gentle flowing sound of the river that meanders its way through the two woods, starting out as ‘Errity’s Stream’ flowing into the ‘Mill River’ coupled with the constant melodic music from the wide variety of birdlife occupying the trees and hedgerows, a great sense of serenity is created as you walk.

The combined loops of Kilanerin and Curragh woods form a figure eight walk linked briefly by road and footpath, while separately they provide a shorter, refreshing looped stroll. From the Kilanerin side, the remains of a mass path used by many people years ago to get to Kilanerin Church can still be seen. On the Curragh side, which has an upper and lower level, there are wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The two walks together provide an oasis of natural habitat and an extremely enjoyable way to spend an afternoon with family and friends of all ages.
