1950s: Ben Laposky – Oscillons

The Innovation: Used oscilloscopes and analog computers to create "Oscillons" — the first electronic visual art. Long exposures of light that only existed for fractions of seconds. Shapes no human hand could draw. Curves no brush could follow.

The Controversy: The art world ignored it completely. Critics and traditionalists argued that because a machine generated the lines, it involved "no human soul" and therefore could not be art. Sound familiar?

The Revolution: Established the concept of generative art, proving that math and code could produce aesthetic beauty. Every AI artist working today is standing on his shoulders.
