In 2014, Harley-Davidson announced Project LiveWire, which first signaled that the Bar and Shield brand would be investing in electric motorcycle development. Now, five years on and countless design-cycles later, we’ve been able to swing a leg over the production version of the 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire.

Staunchly traditional, the LiveWire, along with other releases, signals a shift for the American V-twin manufacturer. Complete with top-shelf componentry, as well as ground-breaking technology, the HD LiveWire hopes to help solidify, if not encourage the EV motorcycle presence.

Powered by a 15.5kWh lithium-ion battery, referred to by HD as the RESS (Renewable Engine Storage System), the LiveWire uses a proprietary electric engine capable of producing a claimed 105 horsepower and 115 ft/lbs. of torque at a whim. For those that have followed HD for many years and love the torque that V-twins characteristically create, the LiveWire will not disappoint in that regard.

Acceleration is shockingly fast – and without a gearbox, the rider only needs to manage the throttle and brakes to get going.
Handling leans toward a sporting side; however, the stiffer suspension setup will transfer some energy into the rider.

Range is comparable with the rest of the EV motorcycle market, although slightly less than some competitors. HD claims that the LiveWire can achieve 146 miles on a single charge – although you’d be hard-pressed to see that in the real world. At a sustained 70 mph, the LiveWire is capable of covering a distance of 70 miles – making a casual Sunday ride or an average commute more than feasible.

Equipped with a standard 120 V charger, the LiveWire takes roughly 10 hours to recover a full charge from a fully-drained state. Those who want faster charge times can spring for the optional 240 V DC Fast Charge stations at home and cut those times in half.
