The Westfield Bulldogs came within one game of winning 4 straight State Championships a year ago.

That would have been a second straight title for then, Junior Quarterback Noah Kim. However, Noah, the leader of perhaps the best team in the state, broke his leg in the second quarter. The Bulldogs fell short in the end as Noah watched from his hospital room.

This year Coach Eric Simmons set a vision for Noah to steadily work back to where he left off last year. Taking it week by week, the Bulldogs have dismantled every team on their schedule and today they came into the Northern Region Championship game to face a Yorktown Patriots team that was big, physical, fast and had a very talented quarterback of their own.

After watching his counterpart, Grant Wilson, guide Yorktown’s offense on a drive that consumed nearly 5 minutes of the clock and end in a 6 yard touchdown pass to Evan Rotker, Kim was ready to step in and take a snap. The first two plays looked like Yorktown might dominate the Bulldogs. On first down, Mikal Legall took a hand off to his right side and was smothered for a two yard loss. Then Charlie Rowe took Alex Richards legs out from under him on Noah’s first pass that fell incomplete on the turf. But on third down, Noah dropped back and found Avery Howard Jr. at mid-field. Howard moved the ball four more yards before stepping out of bounds. Kim found Howard again, a few plays later for a 29 yard touchdown pass that tied the score at 7. He threw two more touchdowns in the first half to lead his Bulldogs to a 21 to 7 halftime lead over Grant Wilson and the Yorktown Patriots.

In the end Noah Kim put together 28 offensive points and the Bulldogs added another special teams touchdown as Westfield knocked Yorktown out of the Playoffs for the second year in a row. Now, Noah, is heading back to the State Semi-final game where he broke his leg a year before. This time, the Bullldogs will face one of their notorious non-conference rivals, the South County Stallions. When these two teams get together there is a lot of hitting and a ton of big plays.

They will play at Westfield High School next weekend. Both teams are 13 -0 and both defenses have yielded only two touchdowns in three playoff games in 2019.
