Mount Umunhum: Hidden Haven In the Clouds

If you look west and skyward while in San Jose, no doubt you may notice the ominous cube sitting atop a high peak off in the distance. Visible from nearly anywhere in South Bay in fact, Mount Umunhum rests among the Santa Cruz mountain range, topped with what appears unceremoniously as a box.

Indeed, "the Cube" is an 85', concrete, former radar tower which was part of Almaden Air Force Station; a radar surveillance post which operated during most of the Cold War, from 1958 to 1980. Now, only silence and peace is found at this decommissioned site.

In this video, nearly the entirety of the Santa Clara Valley is visible; notably San Jose, and even Lick Observatory for the keen-eyed, way across in the Diablo Mountain Range.
