How Much Gardner is in Gardnerian Wicca?

Gerald Gardner is widely known as the father of modern Wicca--and it's true that he is the man who introduced the world to Wicca as we know it. But how much of an influence did Gardner personally have on the tradition of Wicca that's named after him? To what extent do we need to understand him as. a person in order to understand Gardnerian witchcraft? This is a topic on which there's room for reasonable disagreement, but I personally don't see a lot of Gardner's fingerprints on the Craft.
