Directed by Archie Mayo, it features Lew Ayres —fresh off his acclaimed role in All Quiet on the Western Front —as a rising mob boss caught in a violent struggle for power. Based on A Handful of Clouds, a story by Rowland Brown, and adapted for the screen by George Rosener, the film blends raw emotion with fatalistic poetry. The title is a metaphor Cagney uses in the film for the “cloud” of smoke that follows a bullet from a gun barrel.
