I made 3 simple rules for you 2 understand how this 1 works:

use an EI lower than the base ISO if you want more shadow dynamic range, or the vice versa for the highlights
changing the EI alone will have no effect unless you immediately modify the aperture or the ND filtration or the light itself or a combination of the above mentioned
all those changes are made to expose middle grey correctly at 41 IRE if no LUT is used, or 44 IRE when using a s709 LUT
