However, aluminum isn’t as hydrodynamically efficient, which becomes more noticeable when pumping or riding smaller, faster foils.

They agree that beginners—especially those on large foils (1500–2000+ cm²) and big boards—won’t feel a major difference between the two materials early on, so starting with a shorter aluminum mast (around 70 cm) is a smart choice. As skills improve, riders can upgrade not just to a taller mast but also to carbon for a significant performance boost. Carbon’s benefits shine most when riders transition to smaller foils (around 1000 cm²), where efficiency and reduced drag make a clear impact.

They conclude that the choice often comes down to budget, experience, and priorities: aluminum is best for beginners or those valuing durability and lower cost, while carbon is the go-to for experienced riders chasing efficiency, speed, and lighter gear.
