This was the world's first jet airliner. Powered by the de Havilland Ghost Jet Engines, the Comet 1 prototype first flew in 1949.
The de Havilland Aircraft Museum is home to the only surviving Comet fuselage with the original and infamous 'square' windows.


With its aerodynamically clean design, a pressurised cabin, and large windows it offered a relatively quiet, comfortable passenger cabin and was commercially promising at its debut in 1952.
During 1953 and early 1954 several Comets were lost. At least two of these were caused by metal fatigue.The de Havilland Aircraft company were absolved of all culpability for this, since dynamic metal fatigue was not fully understood at that time. The Comet was withdrawn from service and extensively tested.
Although the Comet was extensively redesigned, it had lost it's innovative lead, since other manufacturers heeded the lessons learned from the Comet when developing their own aircraft.
