If you also have only 2 days to explore McLeodganj and Dharamshala, then steal this itinerary! Also, make a note of the budget breakdown.
First, take an overnight bus from Delhi’s Kashmere Gate via Laxmi Holidays, and by the time you open your eyes the next morning, you’ll have reached the Dharamshala bus stop. Bus tickets will cost you between ₹1200 to ₹1800 per person. From there, you can take a taxi to McLeodganj.
After checking into your hotel, freshen up, grab a bite, and rent a scooty for around ₹500 — the most convenient way to explore the city. One thing to keep in mind: the nearest petrol pump is in Dharamshala. Petrol worth ₹200 is enough for exploring over 2 days.
Day 1:
Visit Bhagsunag Temple and Waterfall. By evening, explore the main market of McLeodganj. Be sure to try the momos and other street food there — they are seriously amazing. McLeodganj is also a great place for shopping, but the shops start closing by 8 PM, so plan accordingly.
For dinner, try some delicious Tibetan food at Main Square. We had thukpa at The Tibetan House, and it was the best thukpa we’ve had so far!
Day 2:
Head to the Dalai Lama Temple. Spend some peaceful time there — it's perfect for meditation. The temple complex is quite large, so you can spend a good amount of time exploring it. After that, do some shopping and try some more street food.
Then, take a round-trip ropeway ride from McLeodganj to Dharamshala — a unique experience in itself. A round trip costs ₹750 per person, and a one-way ride is ₹500 per person.
There are two ways to go from McLeodganj to Dharamshala:
1. A shortcut route that is slightly risky with narrow lanes and steep roads.
2. A longer route (around 11 km), which is scenic and lets you enjoy nature along the way.
On the way, you can explore St. John’s Church and some beautiful monasteries. Don’t miss the small roadside dhabas that serve mountain-style maggie, aloo paratha, and chai — absolute must-haves!
Once you reach Dharamshala, get a ₹10 ticket and visit the Dharamshala Cricket Stadium. After dinner, your second day ends. Then take the overnight bus back to Delhi.
We stayed at a property called The Bunksters, which is 2 km away from McLeodganj, on the way to Dharamkot.
This place is a complete vibe! Highly recommended — it's perfectly located near major attractions, and rooms cost ₹2500 per night (may vary based on the room type).
Food and shopping budget depends on your preferences — everything from affordable to premium is available here. Add around ₹100 per day for small expenses like parking.
A little mountain magic, cool breeze, and a view that needs no filter!
Simple, peaceful, and exactly what my overworked city brain needed!
