Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a hair loss disorder caused by androgens and genetics. As such, it must be true that genetically identical twins all go bald at the same exact speeds. Right?

Wrong.

Three separate studies now show that genetically identical twins can go bald at different rates – even after controlling for the past use of hair loss treatments (I confirmed this with the study authors). In some cases, the differences are minor. In others, they're dramatic – with one twins looking like a Norwood 3 and the other approaching Norwood 6 territory.

How is this possible? If AGA is genetic, then how come the pairs of twins within these studies could lose hair at different speeds?

Two of the three studies sought to try and answer this question.

The authors surveyed each subject (~100 twinsets per study totaling ~200 people) to take inventory of their health history, environments, lifestyle habits, medication usages, past traumas, and so much more.

Fascinatingly, the authors found that specific lifestyle choices with statistically significantly correlated with quicker speeds of baldness. Even more interestingly, these lifestyle choices happened to be linked to (1) higher levels of oxidative stress, and (2) excessive hair shedding.

In this video, we'll dive into these studies and our take on the data. We'll explain why their findings actually make perfect sense – especially when we account for what we know about how androgenic alopecia advances. Finally, we'll explore how we might be able to use these insights to help slow down (or normalize) our own hair shedding rates, and in doing so, slow or normalize our own advancement of androgenic alopecia.
