With a diagnosis of tetralogy of fallot (TOF), Zach McKinley had his first heart surgery as a one-year-old in China. After being adopted by Don and Lori McKinley, he moved to the U.S. and had a second surgery at just 6 years old. When Zach was 15, the McKinley family was informed that he might need a third surgery. Instead of having another operation, Zach’s cardiologist referred him to John Thomson at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. The world-renowned interventional cardiologist serves as director of cardiac catheterization. Working together, he and pediatric cardiac surgeon Bret Mettler decided that a catheterization procedure would be the best option for Zach. With the help of the cardiac medical care team, Zach had a short recovery period after his procedure. Cardiac catheterization is one of many procedures offered at the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.
