is famously known as Roop Chaudas or Kali Chaturdashi. It is a popular festival and is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik on the 14th (Chaturdashi).

Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in India and Narak Chaturdashi is a part of it. Kali means dark and Chudas signifies the 14th day. In some parts of India, this day is dedicated to Maha Kali. It is believed that Maa Kali killed Naraksura on this day. Hence, people celebrate this day as the day of light and shine because the evil was eliminated from our lives.

Special pujas dedicated to Lord Shiva are performed on this day. It is believed that performing these pujas help one in attaining moksha or nirvana. It is believed that prayers offered on this day will also help one in getting rid of his/her sins and one will be saved from going to narak or hell. Thus, it is also known as Narak nivaran Chaturdashi.

Puja on the day of Narak Chaturdashi requires oil, flowers and sandalwood. The Mix of the sesame seed, rice fakes along with ghee and sugar is distributed as Prasad. On the day of the puja, people get up early and take bath. It is auspicious if one applies sesame oil before taking bath. One can take bath with water in which apamarga leaves are added.

People should wear new clothes and apply Kajal to ward off the evil eye. Those who practice tantra, learn their mantras on this day. People clean their homes by throwing away things that they don’t use anymore. It is believed that Nisheeth kaal is the time when one should clean their houses and make it pure.

In parts of south India including Goa, Tamil Nadu and some regions of Karnataka, Diwali is associated with Narak Chaturdashi. In all the other regions of India, Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya.
Thus, it is an important day to mark the festive season in India. The day is hoped to bring positivity, health, prosperity in lives of those who celebrate it.
