Keir Starmer has told an emergency meeting police will remain on high alert, after a week of violent disorder sparked by the killing of three young girls in Southport 10 days ago.

The prime minister chaired the Cobra meeting of police chiefs, ministers and officials on Thursday evening as part of the government’s emergency crisis response - the third since unrest broke out.

Sir Keir said there was "no doubt" rapid sentencing as well as having police in the right places across the country had "acted as a deterrent" to prevent the further unrest that had been expected on Wednesday night.

Officials the BBC spoke to resisted the idea a corner had been turned.

More than 50 officers injured in hotel riot
The number of officers injured in the Rotherham hotel riot has been confirmed as 51, South Yorkshire Police said.

They suffered injuries including broken bones, concussion, bruising and head wounds during the violence outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers on Sunday, the force said.

Police horses and dogs also suffered injuries, with one horse having to retire due to a hoof injury, a spokesperson added.

Frontline officers were targeted by missiles, which included concrete blocks, chairs, branches, fire extinguishers, glass bottles and cans, during the "horrendous disorder".

The force said officers who had been unable to resume frontline duties as a result of their injuries were "now part of the team trawling through footage to gather evidence".

Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley thanked the community for their kind messages following the weekend's "horrific events".
