Atmos description:

Sounds of radio static, crackling, rustling, and hissing can be heard during a particularly strong display. Not just common folklore, but the sounds can actually be explained by science: Charged particles become trapped in a layer of the atmosphere that forms during cold nights. The particles rapidly discharge when bursts of material from the Sun crash into Earth, producing clapping sounds and other noises.

As for the aurora itself? Well, these same charged particles are constantly streaming from the Sun in the solar wind and light displays occur when the particles interact with Earth's magnetic field. The particles are channelled toward the poles, where they hit the atmosphere and set off colorful light shows. When the Sun shoots out particularly large bursts of particles, they can set off disturbances in the planet’s magnetic field known as geomagnetic storms. These storms produce the most dramatic auroral displays.
