My setup of late now consist of two guitars with totally different areas of use. I use my fretless VIgier anywhere where sliding into notes on the ”real physical” instrument would be the natural way of playing it. Double bass, Trombone, Erhu or Cello for instance. It helps a lot with that particular aspect of emulation. And I get another type of expression to consider for any new instrument that perhaps has no physical counterpart. You’ll see both software and hardware in this video, and I will describe what I am using and how, in case you find it interesting and wish to try it for yourself.

00.00 - 00-32 I use a clean acoustic tone through Neural DSP’s Archetype: Plini and then through OUTPUT’s Portal on a backing track. Then I play Audio Modeling’s SWAM Trumpet via JamOrigins MIDI Guitar 2.2.1 and a TEControl BBC2 Breath controller

00.33 - 00.56 1)Native Instruments grand piano ’The Maverick’, with 2). SonicCoutores Guzheng and 3) Straight Ahead’s ’Free Jazz drums. . I am however also controlling the Gushing tremolo effect with a sustain pedal

00.57 - 01.23 Stings Fragile inspired by Nisse Landgren (of course). My Vigier Surfreter and the breath controller seem ideal for these occasions.
Software is Audio Modeling ’Alto Trombone’.

01.24 - 01.51 The Vigier again, now with a wireless setup for the breath controller.Software: Audio Modeling ”Cello” Sul Ponticello and virtually No bow pressure at all.

01.52 - 02.05 A solo soprano saxophone (Audio Modeling) with a giant reverb backdrop. Gear: Carvin HH2x and the TEControl BBC2.

02.05 - 02.26 The Suonopuro Ancient flutes collection is a wonderful collection for anyone even remotely interested in instruments like Dizi, Shakuhatchi, Bansuri or perhaps the Xiao, featured here!

02.27 - 02.43 Here I use my breath/bite controller to control: breath = (SWAM) Bass Clarinet expression & bite = inouisamples Multiphonics blend. I also use Inoui’s Stac & slap (Baritone) Sax special effects: key noises and slaps for a live feel!

02.44 - 02.56 I built my instrument here in three layers: 1) SWAM Trumpet, . 2) Imoxplus Respiro, 3) Expressive E’s Noisy synth, with a little bell like character here that react to both aftertouch and breath controller.

02.57 - 03.10 A combination of Expressive E’s ’Noisy’ (physical modeling/subtractive synth) and the Audio Modeling Tenor sax.

03.11 - 03.35 Sometimes I try to tap in to those experiences of music that left a mark in some real sense.. Software here is 1) Audio Modeling’s SWAM Tenor sax, and 2) The UVI Ravenscroft 275 grand piano.

03.36 - 03.55 You’ll find the ”New Dizi” in the fantastic Suonopuro ’Ancient Flutes Collection’! And the same piano preparation as above (a Guzheng with tremolo on the sustain pedal) working a three note selection for some eastern flavor!

03.56 - 04.16 The Moog Guitar has these three modes wherein the first, all strings are affected equally by the sustaining ”vo power”! In the second mode (used here), only the held or depressed notes ring on. And in the third mode they reversed the effect totally and magnetically mute the strings instead! Very creative! This Pen2Bow software is fantastic, but it is truly another instrument in itself.

04.17 - 04.28 In its latest shape, VirHarmonic’s Bohemian Violin V3 (Exp 2) shows a lot of promise, and I feel like I could spend a whole lot of time just playing this as a virtual instrument.

04.45 - 05.11 MiDI in green - A studio in the woods: Gear: my MacBook pro-2011, my Steinberger spirit, and old external USB audio interface, my Ipad for a backing track, 2 Iphones and one GoPro for recording video. I used Sample Modeling's The Trumpet 3 through Kontakt in Mainstage 3, and as usual of course Jam Origin's MIDI Guitar 2.2.1 for audio to MIDI conversion.

05.12 - 05.57 The video & audio is captured by my iPhone as is. I have little mobile speaker i my pocket connected to the iPad.

05.58 - 06.22 I have MIDI Guitar 2 running in standalone, and the breath controller is connected to the computer feeding data for CC2 (Breath). I recorded a loop with Grain on Reason, Also Imoxplus Respiro a fantastic standalone wind synth
