Three major types of environmental footprints of FLW are generally quantifiable:

(i) carbon footprint - the total amount of GHG that is emitted throughout the food’s life cycle, expressed in carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents

(ii) land footprint - the land use to produce that food product

(iii) water footprint - a measure of all the freshwater used to produce and supply the food product to its final consumer. It consists of blue water (groundwater or surface water), green water (rain) and grey water (water used to dilute pollutant concentrations to acceptable levels).

They largely depend on the type of food being produced, as well as on the characteristics of the production system.
