IAC Vikrant handed over to Indian Navy
Today is the big day for Indian Navy. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant’ delivered to Indian Navy by Cochin Shipyard Limited following the extensive user acceptance trials of 5 rounds.
The Cochin Shipyard on Thursday handed over to the Navy the indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant, which was designed by the Navy’s in-house Directorate of Naval Design and will likely be commissioned on August 15.
The indigenous warship is likely to be commissioned on August 15th. It has been built with 76% indigenisation at a cost of about Rs 20,000 cr. The aircraft carrier was built by Cochin Shipyards Limited (CSL) and designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND).
The Ship is named after India’s first aircraft carrier, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant, which played a significant role in the 1971 war. The 262-metre-long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes, much larger and advanced than her predecessor. The aircraft carrier is powered by four gas turbines totalling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 knots.
Vikrant has been built with a high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, and has been designed to accommodate an assortment of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. It will be capable of operating 30 aircraft including MIG-29K fighter jets, the Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) (Navy).
2 MH-60R Romeo Delivered to Indian Navy
Another news is related to MH-60R Romeo Helicopter. Today 2 MH-60 R multirole helicopters were delivered to Indian navy at Cochin International Airport and the 3rd helicopter is scheduled to be delivered in Aug 2022. The delivery of all 24 MH 60R helicopters will be completed by 2025. On 1st of April 2022, the Indian Navy crew has undergone 10-month long training at Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego, USA.
The induction of state-of-the-art mission capable platforms will significantly boost the integral ASW capability of the Indian Navy. MH-60R is a twin-engine medium lift utility helicopter configured for ASW operations. Its avionics includes dual controls, 4 fully integrated 8" x 10”-night vision goggle-compatible and sunlight, readable color multi-function displays, all part of glass cockpit.
ASW Warfare
The MH 60R helicopters will provide the Indian Navy enhanced offensive role including Anti-submarine Warfare, Anti-ship Strike, specialised maritime operations as well as Search and Rescue operations. These aircraft can detect unknown submarines and ships and have the capability to deploy sono-buoys — both active and passive, as part of ASW operations. This will help in locating submarines which are below the water surface. For any fleet which is moving on the high seas, ASW assets are very important to have on board. As these assets will help to alert about threats of an attack by a stealth submarine of an enemy. These assets provide an ASW screen and will help to neutralize any hostile submarine or underwater threats with capability to fire torpedoes.
Interoperability with QUAD
P-8Is & MH-60R can fly in sync. It also will enable interoperability between all the assets of US & India including the MH-60R, P-8Is and warships. They would be able to operate as part of the digital network of the QUAD (Japan, Australia, India and the US) Navies, with NATO specified protocols compatible to US Link-22/Link-16 data link.
