Post-traumatic stress "injury" (PTSI) is a newer, less formal term for the effects of trauma, emphasizing the biological nature of the condition and aiming to reduce stigma by framing it as a physical injury. In contrast, post-traumatic stress "disorder" (PTSD) is the official diagnostic term for a mental health condition with symptoms like flashbacks, avoidance, and mood changes that last for more than a month and interfere with daily life. While symptoms can overlap, the key distinction is that PTSI is often used to describe the initial biological changes, while PTSD is the formal diagnosis for a prolonged mental and emotional response to trauma.


PTSD is a qualifying condition for obtaining a medical cannabis authorization in Washington state. This allows patients to legally possess and purchase cannabis for medical use, including for managing symptoms related to PTSD and its treatment.
