Video Content (transcription):
Hello bonjour, and welcome to your Bonner Private wine Video, I’m your host Julien and here we’re talking about a rather uncommon Tempranillo wine from Washington State you’ve received as part of your domestic US wine selection, 6 wines we’ve cherry-picked for you throughout the best vineyard areas of the West Coast. Here we’ll discuss what is the backstory of this wine, what you should expect from it in terms of style, my tasting note’s highlights, food pairing suggestions and when to drink it. Let’s go.
The man behind this wine is no one else than the Washington wine pioneer Charles Smith, founder of K Vintners, one of the most iconic brands in Washington wine. Charles Smith opened his first winery at the base of the Blue Mountains in the Walla Walla area in 2001, and he’s since received incredible acclaim for his wines over the years. He even created an amazing place to taste his wines in south Seattle in the Georgetown district, literally next door to Boeing Field, the iconic ‘Jet City’ tasting room.
K Vintners is incredibly famous for their Syrah wines in particular with very creative labels, but with this special cuvée they’ve given it a go at the iconic grape from Spain: Tempranillo. This is the grape used to make the famous Spanish wines from Rioja.
The Stoneridge vineyard that makes it is farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices, and is on a deep caliche and basalt soil creating a calcium and iron rich media that forces roots to struggle, and the vines to make concentrated grapes.
What I love in this wine, is first how it more than honors its Spanish heritage by bringing out the best of the fruit intensity we love from Tempranillo, somewhat perfected and amplified. Rarely do you find such a precise and fresh cherry expression of the grape as you do in El Jefe.
Vibrant and pungently fruity to the nose, it is also deep and profound thanks to well-integrated oaky notes of dark chocolate and mocha. When you’ll taste it, you might be surprised, and more importantly pleased, by how smooth it is. Tannins are dense yet incredibly silky, letting your senses vagabond carefreely through the fruity goodness of intense sour cherry liqueur flavors. It’s also got the delicate bitterness you’d also expect from a good cherry liqueur, it tastes almost a bit of cherry stones and it’s got a long and lingering licorice-like finish. So, El Jefe Tempranillo is a universe of smoothness and satisfying fruitiness, with some very interesting bitter notes, it’s just absolutely succulent.
It is obviously to be paired with richly-flavored foods, an absolute winner on grilled meats and rich roasts that, coincidently the Spanish are fond of hence perhaps them using this Tempranillo grape. But It’ll be perfect on salads, pasta, pasta salads even. I think this is going to be a very good friend as a red wine this summer, but it’ll go just as well on more wintery foods. You can drink it now to enjoy its vibrant fruitiness, but this can age 10-15 years with no problems if you want to cellar. It’ll get even spicier, deeper and more complex.
Enjoy this rare and fascinating Tempranillo by a truly iconic producer, and I will see you soon with another video from the Bonner Private Wine Partnership. Cheers
