Indonesia has banned sales of the iPhone 16 due to Apple’s failure to meet local investment rules, according to the industry ministry. Despite Indonesia’s youthful, tech-savvy demographic—with over 100 million people under 30—the country still lacks an official Apple store, leaving consumers to rely on resale platforms for Apple products. The ministry explained that the iPhone 16, launched in September, doesn’t meet a requirement for 40% of the device’s parts to be locally sourced. “The iPhone 16 devices imported by registered importers cannot yet be marketed domestically,” said ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif in a statement Friday.
