2 Days before releasing last year’s "Songs Of a Lost World" on November 1, "The Cure", around their charismatic lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Smith, play a great intimate live session in front of a small audience for BBC Radio 2 Music at London's BBC Radio Theatre, that featured songs from their new album as well as several classics.
"In Between Days" is a song released as the first single from the band's sixth album "The Head On The Door" (1985). The song was an international success. In the UK, it was the band's ninth chart single and their fourth consecutive Top 20 hit; while in the U.S. it was their first single to reach the Billboard Hot 100.
"The Cure" is an English alternative-rock band formed in 1976 in Crawley, by Robert Smith (vocals and guitar), Michael Dempsey (bass guitar) and Laurence Tolhurst (drums). Robert Smith has remained the only constant member throughout numerous line-up changes since the band's formation.
In 1979, English musician Simon Gallup joined the band, and "The Cure" released their first album, "Three Imaginary Boys", which stylistically straddled 1970s punk and 1980s new wave. Upon release, the album received positive reviews in UK music magazines. The band itself was not satisfied with the album because they had relatively little control over the compilation of the songs and the artwork. The album "Seventeen Seconds" was released in early 1980. It was more successful than "Three Imaginary Boys", reaching No. 20 in the UK charts and the single "A Forest" reached No. 31 in the singles charts. The third album "Faith" was released in 1981 and the album "Pornography" in 1982.
During this time, "The Cure's" sound changed: some catchy singles appeared, such as "The Walk" and the jazzy "The Lovecats", which were all brought together on the album "Japanese Whispers".
The 1985 album "The Head On The Door", made them known worldwide in the so-called mainstream with the singles "Inbetween Days" and "Close To Me". In 1987, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell joined the band and "The Cure" released the double album "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me". It included the funky "Hot Hot Hot!!"! and the successful "Just Like Heaven".
The album "Disintegration" was released in 1989. Singles like "Pictures Of You", "Lullaby", "Lovesong" and the driving "Fascination Street" stormed the charts. Later, the live album "Entreat", recorded at Wembley Arena, was released, initially in a limited edition and intended for charity.
In 1990, "Mixed Up" was released, a double album featuring remixes of various "The Cure" singles and a new single, "Never Enough."
A year later, the band released the album "Wish". It was more rock-oriented than "Disintegration"; the spectrum ranged from guitar-driven openers to pop singles and aggressive cuts to ballads. The summer hit "Friday I'm In Love" is still the band's best-selling single and led to a sold-out world tour.
From 1999 - 2005 "The Cure" releases "The Trilogy" and had more personnel changes. From 2006 - 2015 the band began writing and recording material for their thirteenth album "4:13 Dream" and played "Reflections", that refers to a set of shows in which The Cure played their first three albums in full at the VividLive festival at the Sydney Opera House.
Since 2012 Reeves Gabrels, an American guitarist, songwriter, and producer has been a member of "The Cure". He is known for his collaborations with David Bowie and Tin Machine from 1988 to 1999.
In 2018, "The Cure" headlined the 25th annual Meltdown Festival in London and "Songs Of a Lost World", their first studio album in sixteen years, was released in 2024. It reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and was "The Cure's" first chart-topping album since "Wish" in 1992. In the U.S., it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and was the band's first top ten album there since 2004.
The band currently consists of six members: Robert Smith (vocals and guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Reeves Gabrels (guitar), Jason Cooper (drums and percussion), Perry Bamonte (guitar) and Roger O'Donnel (keyboard). Enjoy the video.
