MEXICO CITY — Feb. 22, 2026 — Widespread violence has erupted across Mexico following the reported killing of alleged cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.”

Oseguera Cervantes, 59, was identified as the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most powerful criminal groups.

The Operation

According to Mexico’s Defense Department, the operation took place Sunday in Tapalpa, Jalisco. Authorities said Oseguera was wounded during a military clash and died while being airlifted to Mexico City. Four individuals were killed at the scene, two were arrested, and three Mexican soldiers were wounded. Officials also reported seizing armored vehicles and high-powered weapons.

Cities Paralyzed

Following news of his death, cartel members allegedly set vehicles on fire and established more than 250 roadblocks across 20 states.

In Guadalajara, public transportation was suspended and residents sheltered indoors. Panic scenes were reported at Guadalajara International Airport as security forces secured the facility. Smoke was also seen rising in Puerto Vallarta.

Several states canceled school due to security concerns.

International Impact

The U.S. State Department and the Canadian government issued travel advisories urging citizens to remain in safe locations in affected areas, including Jalisco, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas.

Air Canada suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta, while American Airlines offered travel waivers for Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta routes.
