DESCRIPTION
This episode retells Ezekiel’s most famous vision: the valley of dry bones. Taken in spirit to a vast plain filled with bleached, lifeless bones, Ezekiel is asked by God whether these remnants can live again. The scene is set for a dramatic demonstration of prophetic power and divine promise in the midst of exile.
Ezekiel obeys God’s command to prophesy to the bones. As he speaks, the bones rattle, join together, grow sinews and flesh, and finally stand as a vast army — yet they remain lifeless until God commands a second prophecy to the breath. The Hebrew word ruach, translated as breath, wind, or spirit, brings life into the bodies, turning them into living people.
God explains the vision: the bones represent the whole house of Israel — a people who feel cut off, hopeless, and scattered by exile. The vision promises that God will open their graves, restore them to their land, and put His spirit within them so they will live again. The restoration is both physical and spiritual, aimed at renewing covenant relationship.
Ezekiel then performs another symbolic act: he joins two sticks, representing the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel (Ephraim), into one. This sign accompanies a promise of reunification under one king, an everlasting covenant of peace, and God’s permanent dwelling among His people. The restoration depends on God’s action and the people’s turning back to covenant faithfulness.
