Greg Griffiths from Ivanhoe Cycles takes you through the 2017 model Giant ATX 1 27.5" Mountain Bike.

The Giant ATX series is the entry point recreational level mountain bike for consumers. While not quite capable of the off road adventures that the Talon range can deliver, it can still be used for smooth unsealed surfaces and cruising suburbia with the family.

So what makes the ATX suitable for this? And how are the ATX 27.5 1 and ATX 27.5 2 different? Glad you asked (well, I did really).

The ATX 27.5 1 is the higher-level bike out the two models. Just remember the less the model number, the better the bike – with all Giant and Liv (Giant’s womens brand) branded bikes.
The ATX 27.5 1 features a riding position that is definitely more comfortable and forgiving on the amateur cyclist. The high front and handlebar position encourages a straighter back posture, and the handling is quite stable – most certainly not a race bike – that will come later.

Giant’s ALUXX aluminium frame is both light and durable. As we would expect from the largest cycling brand in the world, the construction quality is superb, and it comes with a Lifetime Frame Warranty.

Shimano employ a 24-speed drive train to help you changing gears smoothly. A word on gears – get the most you can afford. This is because the level of engineering that goes into a 21-speed bike is different to a 24-speed, which is different to a 27-speed. Although we are only speaking of a 3 gear difference, the difference in the smoothness of each gear change is substantial – believe me!

That said, the 24 speed drive train featured on the ATX 1 is more than suitable for relaxed family rides and general commutes. For those unfamiliar with gears, each gear is clearly indicated on the handlebar control and is easy to operate.

Mechanical disc brakes help stop the ATX 1. Powered by Tektro calipers, it is a better recreational level disc brake, and certainly an upgrade over old school V-Brakes that are still in use on entry level mountain bikes.

SR Suntour helps suspend the front of the ATX 1. The XCT model fork is not an overly performance driven suspension fork, but it is very capable of smoothing out small impacts from unsealed surfaces. A blue level on the top of the fork, allows riders to quickly and easily turn the suspension ON for unsealed surfaces and OFF for sealed surfaces to enhance pedalling efficiency.
