Описание к видео Exploring the Enigmatic World of Rust Flies Psilidae: Nature's Rustic Aeronauts

The Psilidae is a family of flies commonly known as rust flies. This family of flies falls within the order Diptera and is characterized by their slender bodies. They are found mainly in the Holarctic region, which includes the temperate zones. The Psilidae family includes at least 38 species divided into four genera. One of the well-known members of this group is the carrot fly (Chamaepsila rosae).

Description:
Psilidae flies are small to medium-sized, ranging from 1.5 mm to 10 mm in length. They exhibit a range of colors, from yellow and reddish to brown or black. Their heads are spherical with relatively small eyes, and the face often slants backward. The antennae are small, with the third antennal segment conspicuously elongated. The arista, a structure on the antennae, may have short or long pubescence. The flies have a distinctive wing structure with various features. The costa (a wing vein) is interrupted at some distance from R1, and only the basal part of the subcosta is developed. The wing typically has a transverse weakening in the basal half and might have clear areas, but also dark bands in some cases along the costa, wing tip, or cross-veins. The vein bordering the anal cell is straight on the outer side. Crossvein BM-Cu is present, and the wing's cell cup is closed. Other morphological features include the absence of vibrissae, the presence of ocelli and ocellar bristles, and up to two pairs of frontal bristles with scattered interfrontal setulae. The tibiae lack a dorsal preapical bristle.

Biology:
Psilidae flies are commonly found in cooler habitats on low-density vegetation, which is why they are well-represented in temperate zones. The larvae of these flies are primarily phytophagous, meaning they feed on nonwoody plants. They inhabit various plant parts such as stems, tubers, and roots. Some species even live under tree bark or form galls. Certain Psilidae species are considered pests in agriculture and horticulture due to their feeding habits. Notable examples of such pests include Chamaepsila rosae Fabricius and Psila nigricornis Meigen.

Genera:
The Psilidae family includes several genera, such as Belobackenbardia, Chamaepsila, Chyliza, Loxocera, Loxocerosoma, Oxypsila, Phytopsila, Psila, Psilosoma, Schizostomyia, Synaphopsila, and Tropeopsila.

In summary, Psilidae, commonly known as rust flies, is a family of flies with distinctive characteristics such as their slender bodies, unique wing structures, and phytophagous larvae. They are often found in temperate regions and can have both beneficial and harmful effects on plant life.
