Numismatist. definition. Is the Study of Rare Coins and or somebody that Collect Rare Coins or both. Walter Breen and King Farouk.

Numismatist, what does that mean? , It means a person who studies and/or collects coins. The (and/or) is important here. I just wanted to point out the difference between the two.

And two numismatist come to mind. Walter Breen is a person that wrote
extensively about coins. Very famous coin book author for that. He actually wrote the complete encyclopedia of coins, a pretty big book. And also, he invented the Breen number systems that identifies the different varieties of coins. And these Breen numbers are in existence today and very popular
with variety of collectors. And this guy who wrote all this information is famous for studying coins but he was never a collector of coins. Didn't collect any, he just liked to study them, and write about them and read about them.

Walter Breen is a numismatist even though he never collected coins. He knows quite a bit about coins obviously. And then you get to the other type, King Farouk, the first king of Egypt and very well known coin collector. He didn't write books about coins. He had an extensive collection of coins from all over the world. He would be considered a numismatist too.

And if you write about coins and collect coins, you would be like David Bowers. He writes books and also collects coins. He's been doing it since the 1940's or 1950's. He's a numismatist also. That's David Bowers author collector.. I would recommend reading his books, they're very informative.
