We talk a great deal about the importance of building relationships, but why do we and what happens when we do?
Being involved in education for more than two decades I have seen, heard and experienced so much, building relationships is the most important part of all I have done. Getting to know the children, families and communities.
The first step is building trust and ensuring others you are there for them. Respect is something which is earned and given. It is not something we demand.
Educators today are not feeling good or safe in their positions as they all seem to be grouped together and dismissed as not being an essential part of the lives of children.
I will always share stories of my students as I do in this video. I speak the truth to my students, I will always be there for them when they are in need or want to celebrate.
Knowing a person by a title and respecting the title is something we should all strive to make sure we are instilling in our children. My students struggle with trying to call me Brenda as they are adults with children of their own. I appreciate the respect and honor they give me, but calling me by my first name is just fine.
