They weren't.
There are things in the forest that mimic voices and faces. They've been watching fire lookouts for decades, learning our patterns. The rules keep them on their side of the boundary.
Rule Three saved my life. Rule Four is why I can never leave.
My uncle lasted 8 years. I've lasted 70 days and I'm already recruiting the next person.
