Today I present to you something a bit different. This is a song I've been wanting to do for a long time, but haven't got around to it simply because I thought the arrangement would be to difficult, which it was, but I think I did an alright job. Here is a cover of the theme from Spirited Away 'One Summer's Day'.

Studio Ghibli to me feels like one of those things that you're obligated to have a positive outlook on, and even though I think they're slightly overrated, they are still a great animated studio. Their character design, set pieces and backgrounds all look incredible and leave me in awe every time I see one of their films. The problem I have with Studio Ghibli, is there dialogue and voice acting. It always seems that the actors are being rushed to finish their lines, and they also sound like they haven't been given much direction. Even in the original Japanese versions the actors can sound a bit 'lost' at times, especially Chihiro actor(s). But, I guess that's just something that comes with Ghibli, dialogue isn't their focus so it's not something worth focusing on.

Something that's always fantastic within Studio Ghibli's works however is Joe Hisaishi Compositions and Orchestrations. I think what I like so much as him is he has a great range, he can be calm and simple in tracks like "The sixth station" and he can be chaotic and complex in tracks like "The Bottomless Pit". He's also good at using melodies as a focus point in his song, which I think is a bit uncommon now in modern film score, a good example of this from spirited away would be "It's Hard Work!".

This track "One Summer's Day" is great because I love how this song has a very simple melody but built around it with a grand and large orchestra arrangement, which I think sounds beautiful. This track was a lot of fun to arrange, but it was also a lot of work to match the level of power and emotion that Hisaishi has in his songs. I was actually really stressed when making the arrangement for this, like if I didn't get the arrangement absolutely perfect then the entire Ghibli fanbase would come after me for doing One Summer's Day injustice. But, as normal, as I got to the end of the production, I just wanted it done.
