Here’s why you should never write “sometimes” and what to say instead.
1. “Sometimes” hides how unpredictable needs really are
When you write “He sometimes needs help,” a decision-maker may assume he often doesn’t.
Instead, describe the pattern:
“Most days he needs help to dress and wash. On rare calm days he can start but cannot finish without support.”

2. Use phrases that show frequency and context
The DWP needs to see how needs affect your child over time.
Instead of “She sometimes bolts,” write:
“She regularly runs off without warning when overwhelmed by noise or crowds.”

3. Be specific, not emotional
Avoid “Sometimes he gets upset.”
Write:
“At least once daily he becomes distressed when routines change and needs adult support to calm down.”

4. Link it to reliability
The law says tasks must be done safely, repeatedly, and in a reasonable time.
So even if your child manages something once, if they can’t do it safely or consistently, that still counts as needing help.

5. Replace ‘sometimes’ with truth that shows the pattern
Words like “often,” “regularly,” “in most situations,” or “every time we attempt” give the DWP a clearer picture.
