The leading edge of blades in turbines are subjected to very harsh working environment involving heat, droplets and particles. To increase the wear and cavitation resistance of these blades their edges are Laser hardened. Due to the precisely controlled heat input in the Laser hardening process :

1. A very well defined hardened zone is created on the blade surface giving excellent wear protection.
2. Since the heat input is localized there is minimum deviation from original dimensions of the blade.
3. Being a surface hardening process the original ductility of the blade remains intact.
