Radiofrequency skin tightening devices can give you amazing results when used the right way. From tightening sagging skin to promoting collagen induction and boosting elastin. Of course, the instructions are never clear with these devices and it can be easy to make some detrimental mistakes.

So to help you guys make the most of your facial tightening machines, I’ve pulled together a list of things I’ve learned over the past 14-months.

- Starting with a high-intensity RF level. Unlike treatment in professional settings, you need to take time to understand your skin and how it responds.

- Using oil-based creams or lotions. These are useless with RF and can cause burns, acne, and facial cysts.

- Not applying serums before use - RF not only helps the skin to contract and collagen to be produced, it also helps serums penetrate deeper into the upper layers.

- Using the RF skin tightening device too often. You need to give your skin a chance to recover, create collagen and elastin and plump up.

- Cooling your face down afterwards brings blood circulation up, delivering white blood cells en-masse to start the healing process. Cooling the skin also helps brighten the complexion and limit downtime from intensive treatments. Wait for 15-minutes after a treatment to do this.

- Shaving or exfoliating the same day as treating the face. For some people, this isn’t possible due to facial hair or acne-treatments. Using RF devices on exfoliated or freshly shaved skin will cause irritation.

- Targetting the wrong areas of the face. It’s tempting to go straight in on the wrinkles or lines, but RF skin tightening is an art form. It’s all about knowing where to tighten to lift and smooth problem areas. As an example, A hooded eyelid will open up more by lifting it up and out by focussing on the upper outer corner. The marionette lines will soften by treating half an inch either side of them.

- Using dirty wand tips. Dirt and serums will cause oxidisation of the RF device attachments. The dirtier they get, the less effective the device becomes. Always wipe down the machine and its parts with an alcohol gel after use and store it away in a dry, dark place. This will also help prolong the life of your device. Dirty tips can also cause acne by pushing unwanted bacteria into the skin.

- Not using sunscreen. Just because RF skin tightening doesn’t cause open wounds, doesn’t mean your skin isn’t extra sensitive. UV is your faces worst enemy and sunscreen after treatment is an absolute must. If you really want to get the most out of each treatment, take care of all layers. The RF device regenerates lower layers and sunscreen keeps them soft, supple and clear as the start to emerge.
