Can a Sword Scabbard be Used Defensively? (with

I remember seeing some techniques from Kenjutsu (Japanese swordsmanship) that involve the use of the saya (scabbard) as a defensive tool. How effective might that be, and could you use medieval / renaissance European scabbards in the off-hand to parry?

For this video Matt Easton joined me during our visit at Tod's place, and Tod sacrificed a WIP scabbard to test how much damage a blade might do to it.
