A group of preschoolers have gone viral online, after their temple dance was interrupted – perhaps by a god! The students of dance teacher Hsieh Chih-yun were dancing to a pop song, to mark the birthday of a major god in Taiwanese folk religion. But suddenly, their music cut out, and was replaced by the sound of Buddhist chanting. The kids’ bemused reactions brought joy to the whole audience, although their teacher was sweating in the audience. What can have caused this musical mix-up?

The cheerful pop song cuts out, to be replaced by Buddhist temple chanting! All the girls freeze. Tsu-feng Temple in Pingtung had invited the preschoolers to perform to celebrate the birthday of a deity called Holy Emperor Guan. This video of the musical snafu went viral when it was posted online.

Everything had gone so smoothly with the previous school. They didn’t make any mistakes. Then we got to this school, and less than a minute after they got onstage, the music cut out. Ten kids were onstage, looking at each other nervously. As their teacher, I broke out in a cold sweat! I looked over at the sound tech guy at the side, and he shrugged at me. He didn’t know what was up!

Thankfully the music was soon restored to normal, and the kids could resume their number happily. The comic interlude has been embraced by netizens, though some wondered if the mix-up was because Holy Emperor Guan isn’t a fan of pop music.

The track had played about halfway through when it cut off, weirdly. The temple has a speaker that plays outside, so when it muted, we picked up the sound of the Buddhist chants.

So it turns out it was just a simple tech malfunction, probably not a divine intervention. But the dancers’ adorable reactions brought an extra dimension of joy to the temple celebrations.
