In this video I have explained all about spur gear terminology and Difference between Involute and Cycloidal Profile Gear with detailed explaination

THE MOST IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS RELATED TO SPUR GEAR ARE -

1) MODULE (m) : It is the ratio of the pitch circle diameter to the number of teeth on gear.

2) PITCH CIRCLE: It is an imaginary circle on gear, by which pure rolling action would transfer the same motion and power as the actual gear. It is the basis of measurement for other parameters of gear.

3) PITCH CIRCLE DIAMETER (D): It is the diameter of pitch circle. The size of the gear is usually specified by the pitch circle diameter.

4) CIRCULAR PITCH : It is the circular distance measured along the circumference of pitch circle from a point of one tooth to the corresponding point on adjacent tooth.

5) DIAMETER PITCH : It is the ratio of number of teeth to the pitch circle diameter.

6) FACE OF TOOTH : It is the surface of the gear above pitch circle.

7) FLANK OF TOOTH : It is the surface of the gear below pitch circle.

8) ADDENDUM CIRCLE : It is the circle drawn through the top of the teeth which is concentric to the pitch circle.

9) DEDENDUM CIRCLE : It is the circle drawn through the bottom of the teeth. It is also called as root circle.

10) ADDENDUM : It is the radial distance of tooth from the pitch circle to the top of the tooth. Its standard value is one module.

11) DEDENDUM : It is the radial distance of tooth from the pitch circle to the bottom of the tooth. Its standard value is 1.15.

12) CLEARANCE : It is the radial distance between the top of the tooth of one gear to bottom of the tooth of another mating gear. Its standard value is 0.157.

13) TOTAL DEPTH : It is the radial distance between the top of the tooth to bottom of the tooth. it is equal to the sum of the addendum and dedendum of a gear.

14) WORKING DEPTH : It is the radial distance from addendum circle to the clearance circle. It is equal to the addendum of two mating gears.

15) TOOTH THICKNESS : It is the width of the teeth measured along pitch circle.

16) TOOTH SPACE : It is the space between two adjacent tooth measured along the pitch circle.

BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CYLOIDAL GEAR AND INVOLUTE GEARS :

CYCLOIDAL GEARS----

1. It involves double curves for the teeth i.e. epicycloid and hypocycloid.
2. Complex Manufacturing.
3. Less Wear of tooth.
4. No interference.
5. Pressure angle varies from a maximum at the beginning of the engagement, reduces to zero at the pitch point, and again increases to a maximum at the end of the engagement.
6. Exact center distance is required to transmit a constant velocity ratio.

INVOLUTE GEARS----

1. It involves single curves for the teeth.
2. Easy Manufacturing.
3. More wear of tooth.
4. Interference can occur.
5. The pressure angle is constant throughout the engagement of teeth.
6. A little variation in a center distance does not affect the velocity ratio.
