STORYLINE:

U-S President George W. Bush has warned that relations with China could be damaged if the US spy plane issue is not resolved soon.

Flanked by U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell on Morning during a White House meeting with his cabinet, Bush said all diplomatic channels remain open in the effort to free the 24 crew members, held on China's Hainan Island.

He says he understands diplomacy takes time, but every day that goes by increases the potential that U-S relations with China will be negatively affected.

Bush spoke with reporters immediately after concluding a telephone call with U-S Brigadier General Neal Sealock, head of the diplomatic team on Hainan Island.

Sealock met with the crew members for 40 minutes on Monday.

A White House spokesman says U-S officials believe the crew members' spirits are as high as they've ever been.

U-S officials also add their "unit integrity" or morale is "second to none."

The crew have been held by Chinese officials for more than a week now, after an emergency landing on Hainan following a collision with a Chinese fighter jet.
