The first Egyptian museum of Arabic calligraphy has been inaugurated in Alexandria this week.
From paintings to sculptures and script, it showcases a vast collection of the art form which started as a tool of communication.

STORY-LINE:
These galleries are lined with artworks related to a form of writing which dates back thousands of years.
This museum in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, has opened as part of renovations to the Hussein Sobhy museum of fine arts.
Its goal is to raise awareness and appreciation of the art of calligraphy.
"The Museum of Arabic Calligraphy is the first of its kind in Egypt, it contains calligraphy items. The museum contains a very special collection of the artist Mohamed Ibrahim," says museum manager Ali Saiid.
Artist, Mohamed Ibrahim established a school for Arabic calligraphy in Alexandria in 1936.
Saiid says Arabic calligraphy has developed over many years.
"The museum contains items from different periods, from historic to modern, it also contains artefacts from the middle ages, there are some items dated back to the 19th century and other items created by modern day artists," says Saiid.
Calligraphy, a visual art associated with writing, contains many techniques and uses a variety of tools.
Archaeologists relate its origin to inscriptions dated back to the 14th century BC.
The Abbasid and the Safavic dynasties are the two most influential periods on the development of the artform.
Arabic calligraphy started as a tool of communication and a mean of documentation which later was adapted into art, architecture and design.
The Kufic style is the first formal calligraphy style used in writing the Quran.
The style originated in the Iraqi city of Al-Kufa and later on developed and spread in the Arab world.
"My son liked the Kufi calligraphy when he saw it. I am thinking of teaching him Arabic calligraphy," says Sally Mohsen as she strolls through the gallery.
The documentation of the holy Quran is a reflection of the relationship between Islamic art and calligraphy.
Over the years, the Quran has been written and preserved in different fonts, depending on the geographical region and the historical period it was written in.
