Helen Watts was born in Pembrokeshire and died there on 7 October 2009. From 1953 to 1983 she pursued a quietly spectacular career, gracing innumerable recordings of opera and song with impeccable, detailed musicianship and an individual, dark-hued voice. I mourn the passing of an artist who has been a presence all my listening life, and so I'd like to share this wonderful recording of Sapphische Ode as a tribute to a singer who deserved greater recognition than she received, though I suspect she would have hated that!
