You Are Not Your Genes: The Hereditarian Fallacy

Hereditarianism is the belief that most human differences are due to genetic differences. In this video, we examine this perspective from a historical and scientific viewpoint. You will learn how the idea spread and attained widespread support, leading to atrocious government policies around the world. Next, you'll learn the basics of quantitative genetics, including how to calculate heritability, the breeder's equation, and gene by environment interactions. Lastly, we'll tackle whether there is any empirical support for Steven Pinker's ideas that most human traits are heritable and that the effects of genes exceed that of families. Ultimately, we conclude that hereditarianism is bogus and that human behavioral differences are almost entirely determined by environmental effects - genes are not destiny, you are not your genes.
