Japan has pledged funding for the construction of a harbor and industrial area in southern Myanmar.

Officials from Japan, Thailand and Myanmar attended a ceremony in Bangkok on Monday. They signed an agreement to co-finance the complex in the Dawei Special Economic Zone, which will facilitate exports to India and the Middle East.

The agreement requires each of the three countries to make an initial contribution of about 166,000 dollars.
The economic zone facing the Indian Ocean will enable faster and more economical exports to India and the Middle East.

Myanmar and Thailand had requested Japanese support to cover the massive development costs.

Analysts say Tokyo has been considering the project on behalf of Japanese companies, including automakers which have plants in Thailand.

Talks between representatives of the three countries are scheduled in order to finalize concrete development plans for the project.
