Born in the Great St Bernard Hospice, a monastery that cared for travelers crossing the treacherous mountain pass, he was trained to search for lost travelers in the snow. With his powerful sense of smell, Barry could track people buried under layers of snow and ice, and his thick fur coat kept him warm in the sub-zero temperatures. He was fearless and would risk his own life to save others, often working alone in the blizzards. One of his most famous rescues was when he saved a small child who was stranded in a blizzard. The child was suffering from hypothermia and frostbite and was close to death when Barry found him. The dog wrapped his large body around the child, keeping him warm, and stayed with him until rescuers arrived.
