Why should we protect the Rainforests? From towering Brazil nut trees to the jaguars and sugar gliders that call rainforests home, they are, arguably, Earth's most iconic ecosystem type. What makes a rainforest a rainforest, though? A rainforest is a forest that is home to rich, endemic biodiversity, a high level of annual rainfall (typically between 80 and 400 inches), a diverse and layered canopy structure, and nutrient-poor soil comprised of decomposed matter. 🌿💚

Rainforests are one of the best defenses against climate change due to their ability to remove greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere. It is estimated that 40-100+ different species of trees can be detected in each hectare of a tropical rainforest. Tropical rainforests can be found close to the equator, where the temperatures are warmer, while temperate rainforests can be found in cooler coastal areas north or south of the equator. Both support a stunning diversity of life, and are under threat. These iconic ecosystems can be protected by planting trees.
