In April of 2021, the Russian Federation began mobilizing a large military force of over 80000 men at the border of Ukraine and in Crimea. Tanks and other military vehicles have been seen moving to the front as well. Fighting between Ukraine and Russian backed separatists has also escalated, and observers say the current cease fire is falling apart.
Similar to Syria, Ukraine is a point of contention between NATO and Russia. The former soviet state has moved to strengthen ties with the west and is now stuck between a rock and a hard place. While many Eastern European states became NATO members after the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has many internal issues to solve before it will be allowed to join the defensive alliance.
Ukraine is now calling for help from NATO with the president going so far as visiting the trenches in Eastern Ukraine to raise awareness of the threat his country is facing. Ukraine is bolstering its military forces but is incapable of stopping the Russian threat alone. Today we’ll be going over the history and implications of Ukraine’s precarious position in Eastern Europe.

At the time of the recording of this video, the United States deployed 2 warships to the Black Sea and warned Russia against taking any military action. In response, the Kremlin warned the United States to stay away from Crimea quote “for their own good” unquote. Following the comment, the U.S. warships altered course and are now stationed at the island of Crete. Ukrainian and NATO leaders continue to discuss strategy while Putin refuses to respond to Ukraine’s calls for de-escalation.
