How can you check the status if you've already filed? Unfortunately, there's not an easy way to do so. You do need to contact the IRS. There is an 800 number you can call. I call quite often because I have practitioner priority access. I'm an IRS registered attorney. The last time I talked with them, they asked me not to call on my client's behalf until the returns have been filed for at least six months. As far as checking on status, you can request your own transcripts from the IRS to make sure that they've received the claim. Other than that, it's really a matter of keeping your eye on the mailbox. Make sure that you receive overpayment notices and eventually those checks, so long as you are qualified, and did it correctly.
