YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra)のアルバム「Solid State Survivor」収録曲「Behind the Mask」をソフトシンセでカバー！実機VP-330ボコーダーと数々のプラグインシンセを駆使した再現演奏と自作映像でアップ致しました。

この音源は、エミュレーション系ソフトシンセのポテンシャルを探るため、ソフトウェアでハードウェアのサウンドをどこまで再現可能かをYMOの楽曲「Behind the Mask」を使って実証したものです。VP-330ボコーダーのみ実機を使用し、その他の楽器音は全てソフト音源を使いPC上で再現したものです。映像は僕が iPhoneで撮り溜めた動画素材を楽曲のイメージに合うものを選び編集しました。
結果ソフトシンセの再現性が想像以上に高いと感じました。prophet~5 や Arp Odessy は実機も所有していますが、メンテナンスや保管場所を考えると、もはやソフトで充分では？と思える程でした。
製作の裏話
制作は隙間時間を利用して少しずつ組み立てていきました。スーパーコピーレベルまで再現してみようとも思いましたが、唯一実機使用したVP-330ボコーダーが録音の最中音程が不安定になり、修理なくしての続行は不可能と感じ、それを機に止めました。（笑）何せ４０年以上前の製品ですので。。。
再現コピー、その他について
当初、他人の楽曲のコピーは個人的な研究に留め、発表は考えておりませんでした。しかし残念なことに今年１月４月と立て続けにYMOのメンバーがお亡くなりになり、お二人を偲んで作品を聴き直しました。改めて偉大さを再認識し、少なからず影響を受けた者として、感謝の意を表す場として公開することに致しました。実際に自分で音を再現していく中で様々な発見や驚きが多く有りました。
今回の動画はMV仕立てでお届けしますが、皆様の関心次第で、分析やピアノロール付解説の動画の追加も有りかな？とも考えます。ぜひコメント欄にご意見をお寄せください。

A soft synth cover of "Behind the Mask" from YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra)'s album "Solid State Survivor"! I've uploaded a re-enactment using the real VP-330 vocoder and a number of plug-in synths, as well as a self-made video.

This sound source was created to explore the potential of emulation-type soft synths, and to demonstrate how much of the hardware sound can be reproduced with software, using YMO's song "Behind the Mask." Only the VP-330 vocoder was used, and all other instrument sounds were reproduced on a PC using soft sound sources. I selected the video material I had taken with my iPhone and edited it to match the image of the song.
As a result, I felt that the reproducibility of the soft synth was higher than I expected. I also own the actual Prophet~5 and Arp Odessy, but when I thought about the maintenance and storage space, I thought that software would be enough.
The story behind the production
I built it little by little in my spare time. I thought about reproducing it to the level of a super copy, but the VP-330 vocoder, which was the only real machine I used, became unstable during recording, and I felt that I couldn't continue without repairing it, so I stopped. (lol) After all, it's a product that's over 40 years old...
About the reproduction copy and other things
Initially, I kept the copying of other people's songs as personal research and didn't think about releasing them. However, unfortunately, two members of YMO passed away in succession in January and April of this year, and I listened to their work again in memory of them. I realized their greatness once again, and as someone who was influenced by them to a certain extent, I decided to release it as a place to express my gratitude. I made many discoveries and surprises while actually reproducing the sounds myself.
This video will be delivered in the style of a music video, but depending on your interest, we may add videos with analysis and commentary with piano rolls. Please leave your thoughts in the comments section.
