Why Seoul’s Royal Palace was built in the Western hood

After walking through this neighborhood, a hundred times, I still needed to learn about its story. A story that has shaped Korea’s modern history. I am talking about Jeong-dong. The neighborhood with the royal palace of Deoksugung. A court not far from Gyeongbukgung palace and next to the iconic City Hall. This is the neighborhood where Westerners first moved in within the old city walls. Quite a unicum because this was long forbidden. Something in Korea was going to change, and it was going to change rapidly.

이 동네를 수없이 걸었지만 이렇게 제가 알지 못하는 이야기들이 많다는 것을 몰랐습니다. 한국의 근현대 역사를 만든 이야기죠. 바로 정동에 다녀왔습니다. 이 동네는 황궁인 덕수궁이 있어요. 경복궁과 멀지 않은 곳에 있는 아이코닉한 시청 건물 바로 옆에 있죠. 이 동네는 서양인들이 옛 성벽 안에 처음으로 정착한 곳이에요. 오랫동안 금지되었기 때문에 꽤 독특하다고 볼 수 있죠. 한국이 빠르게 변하던 시기였을 것입니다.
