Abstract: Many digital music instruments – MIDI controllers or synthesizers – have a limited user interface, making deep parameter editing difficult. To compensate for this, manufacturers usually provide an editor application running on a powerful desktop computer with their products. However, creating and supporting such an application on several OS platforms is very expensive. This paper proposes a framework to implement a remote UI, based on web standards. Building on the advanced capabilities of modern web browsers – hardware accelerated graphics, scripting, cross-platform compatibility – it is possible to provide a true "write once, run everywhere" solution, which may even completely replace the on-device user interface of hardware products.



About Zoltán Jánosy

Zoltán Jánosy has been working in the audio and music instrument industry as an embedded software engineer for 15 years. He has been involved with AKAI professional, where developed the synth control, MIDI and UI modules of the EWI4000s Electronic Wind Instrument, and the complete firmware of the EWI-USB. Currently he is working with Fishman Transducers, Inc., where he is involved in the development the USB communication and DFU protocol for the TriplePlay Wireless Guitar System, and the firmware and UI development of the FC-1 Floor Controller. Zoltan is also a member of the MMA MIDI over Bluetooth LE Working Group, developing the next generation of wireless connectivity standards for MIDI devices.
