Germany joins a growing list of countries to suspend use of the Astrazeneca vaccine amid reports of suspected links to blood clots. Meanwhile, Germany's centre for disease control says new cases of COVID-19 are now rising exponentially.
Since March the 8th, AstraZeneca has registered 37 cases of blood clot related issues among recipients. A total of 17 million people have received the AstraZeneca shot so far in Europe and the UK. So that makes it roughly two cases per one million vaccine recipients - a number that the World Health Organization says does not suggest a link. In the general population, the rate of blood clots is over two cases per-1,000 people. But the German federal institute for vaccines recommended suspending the use of the vaccine due to a higher rate of a rare form of blood clot that affects the brain. The European Medicines Agency is reviewing the reports - and is to decide what further steps to be taken on Thursday.
